Prescott Family Crest

The Prescott's Family Crest:

Description of the Prescott's coat of arms:

Black shield with a single inverted white chevron line (inverted V shaped mark) or arrow. Chevrons appeared early in the history of heraldry, especially in Normandy.  The chevron is one the major shapes used upon a shield, known as ordinaries. The inverted ‘V’ of the chevron is perhaps thought to have originated to represent a military scarf folded on the shield, or additional cross-pieces used to strengthen the shield and painted a different color. It has also acquired the meaning of “Protection… granted… to one who has achieved some notable enterprise”.

Inside they are tree owls
The Owl, (fr. hibou): this bird is frequently found in armorial bearings, and it is always depicted full-faced. It is found in an old roll of arms(as is supposed) under the name of hilt. In one coat the horned owl is named. An owlet, fr. hulotte, is only borne in French arms: the French also have the chouette, which is the screech-owl. The chat-huant, also a kind of owl, is borne by the family of D'HUC DE MONSEGOUT.
Sable, a chevron between three owls argent--PRESCOTT, co. Hertford.

Prescott Family Crest: the owl. Birds of great variety occur throughout heraldry, at least in name. The owl has long been associated with heraldry and is depicted in a clearly recognized aspect, always with its face to the viewer. It comes as no surprise that previous generations of heraldic writers ascribed to it the traits of “vigilance and acute wit”.

The Prescott's Family motto scroll: "NIL CONSCIRE SIBI."  From the latin phrase: NIL CONSCIRE SIBI, NULLA PALLESCERE CULPA which translates to have a clear conscience and not pale at any charge. Written by Horace, Epistles meaning to have no guilt at heart.
